A lot of the posts over at purseforum.com maintain that the Couture and Ink colors are dupes. In your experiences, is this true? Since you prefer the Couture brand to pretty much everything else, I assume the formula is different, but I'm wondering if it's worth investing in both brands if their colors are identical.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, at this point you haven't swatched any of the parallel colors (e.g., you've done Ink's American, but not Couture's, which is supposedly its equivalent; and you've done Couture's Amethyst Crush but not Ink's alleged parallel, Berry Funk). Nevertheless, have you heard anything about this?
Thanks!
I have swatched the entire Couture line but haven't featured them all here yet (check out their web page to see all of my swatches). I have found that there are quite a few duplicate colors between the two brands, but a lot of non-dupes as well. I have swatched a few of the claimed parallel colors between my blog here and the swatches for Couture's website. Some are duplicates, others are not. The Americans, for example, are not dupes. Couture's American is a sheer jelly (I used it as my base for the french manicure with the ring in my nail art gallery) and Ink's American is a cream pink. Some of the others that I had from both lines aren't exact, but close enough that I would call them dupes. Others that have been labeled as dupes are different enough in my opinion that I can't say they are true dupes, but they are close enough in color that you wouldn't need both. For example, Ink Lime Sorbet and Couture Sea Foam are close in color but not exact. I actually prefer the color of Lime Sorbet because it's a bit less pastel.
ReplyDeleteI did a little research on dupe colors between brands not too long ago and learned that most US gel manufacturers do not grant exclusive rights to colors, so it's not uncommon to see similar and even exact colors between different brands. Gelish and Red Carpet Manicure are another example of this. I do like Couture's formula better. Both brands are great in my opinion, but the Coutures seem to apply smoother for me. Another factor between the two brands that stands out to me is that Couture makes an effort to correct any issues such as fading. For example Amethyst Crush was once a fader but is not now. Last I heard, Berry Funk still turns a funky brown shade after a few days of wear. Couture also corrected Skinny Jeans, which was a fader in it's original formulation.
As for investing in both brands, it really depends on the color and your personal preference between the two. Couture has 105 colors in their line. Ink has over 170. Since I don't own the entire Ink line, I can't say for sure how many duplicate colors exist. I do know that there are quite a few different colors from each brand. For example, I haven't found a dupe to Couture's French Affair in the Ink line. The closest gel they have is Frosted Flakes, but the pigment is much chunkier than in French Affair (French Affair makes a great topper while Frosted Flakes turns colors into pastels). And there's nothing in the Couture line that matches Ink Scarlet Empress.
I don't know if any of this helps answer your question. I continue to buy from both brands, and if I get a dupe I list them for swap or sale. :)
