Which gel polish was the best and which was the worst?
ReplyDeleteThe best in my opinion is Couture. 2nd is Ink. Both of these brands apply well, wear well, are highly pigmented, and remove easily. Couture comes in slightly ahead of Ink because it is a DIY brand, so there is a support aspect for non-professionals that is lacking with Ink. My 3rd favorite is IBD. Great color range, easy removal, and while not as opaque as the other two, it does wear well for me. The worst for me is probably Essie. The brush is too narrow so it is hard to apply without streaks. And it doesn't cure in non-Essie LED lamps, which is a major negative in my opinion. However, I would have to test it in their lamp to offer a solid opinion. It did wear well when cured in my UV lamp and removal was not difficult at all.
DeleteIs there a brand that is noticibly more consistent with good results than others overall? How about for specifics types such as glitter, frost & creme finishes? You should do awards! Best red/pink/nune/etc, longest wear...even per type!
ReplyDeleteAwards would be fun, but I honestly don't leave them on long enough to be fair. I get bored after a week. lol Let me think about the others and I'll get back to you. I tend to gravitate toward faster soak off instead of longer wear.
DeleteDo you have a favorite white polish? I've tried OPI GelColor's Alpine Snow and two from the Gelish line and I'm still not thrilled - especially when three coats are necessary for full opacity. I'd love any suggestions! cindykvfc@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteHi Cindy. My go-to white is Couture Ooh La La French. It is a bright white that is opaque in two. I'm on my second bottle :)

I'm in the UK and fortunately Couture ship here, I placed one order a few days back as a result of seeing the swatches but stupidly didn't read the comments - just ogled at the photos and ran to the shops! DeleteOkay This is one of the best blogs ever, I just stumbled upon you and I am so glad I did. I've been doing gel nails about about three years now. I mainly use Gelish and red carpet, but with your advanced knowledge, I am going to try that primer cause i'd love to not have to buff my nails before to roughen them up. Also in your opinion which brand soaks off the best? Also my lighter pinks bubblegums/barbie pinks tend to fade and get even lighter after a day or two with Gelish does this happen with any of your colors? Thanks again.

I'm so glad you find my blog helpful. :) For soak off, I have the quickest results with Couture, IBD, LeChat and Ink, but I find the base gel also plays a large role in soak off. Couture removes very quickly for me (usually around 7-10 minutes with Couture base) while Gelish is a much longer soak off (20-25 with Gelish Foundation). Gelish Foundation does wear longer so it is a bit of trade off. Of course, that's not an issue for me since I change my polish every week anyway.
DeleteAs for pinks, Gelish seems to have more pinks that fade than any of my other brands. Couture does a great job of correcting any of their colors that are found to fade, so I tend to trust that their pinks will stay pink. IBD Just Gel has a fair selection of pinks in that range, and I don't know of any that are faders right off the top of my head. Then there's always LeChat. So far my experience with their pinks is that they remain true as well. Hope this helps. :)
Okay another question what have you found to be the best way to soak off gel? I'd love to know cause I do use the gelish but find I wear it till it lifts because soaking takes so long.
ReplyDeleteI prefer the foil wrap method. I actually use the foil wraps made for removing gel like the ones by Gelish or Couture. Use a fine file to break the seal of the top coat in the center of the nail. Apply cuticle oil to the skin around the nail. Apply pure acetone to the pad on the wrap, wrap it around the tip of your finger, then apply heat to speed things up. I use microwave heating mits, but a heating pad works just as well :)
DeleteThank you for a great blog! I only wish I had found it sooner! I have had several fails looking for a sheer pink. After years of using CND shellac, I am trying other brands because of the time savings of LED drying versus UV. CND Romantique was great for me in a single coat, but it fades and becomes milky. I bought Gelish Pink Smoothie in hopes of having just a sheer wash of pink with one coat but it's too dense a color. Any suggestions from your favorite lines?

ReplyDeleteI bounce between three lamps. My primary lamp is a Couture LED. My secondary lamp is a Salon Edge Crescent LED. Finally, I have a 2 handed thermal spa UV lamp that I use for non-LED polishes.
